The Official Journal of the European Union has published Regulation (EU) 2025/2509 on the safety of toys, formally repealing Directive 2009/48/EC.

This regulation introduces a directly applicable legal framework across the EU, reflecting scientific and technological developments in toy safety. Key elements include strengthened chemical safety requirements, updated risk assessment obligations, enhanced traceability through digital tools, and explicit consideration of toys with digital features.

A transition period is foreseen, with full application scheduled for August 2030, allowing economic operators and conformity assessment bodies time to adapt to the new requirements.

MTIC InterCert is monitoring the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2025/2509 and its interaction with existing and forthcoming EU product legislation.

Further updates will be shared as harmonised standards and implementation details become available.
